the Specktator

Events

The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!

As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.

NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to whatsup@thespecktator.com.

And by the way, be sure to change the view from “month” to “stream” below. Unless you like being really annoyed.

‘A Star Is Born’ at Sun-Ray Cinema @ Sun-Ray Cinema
Oct 8 all-day
'A Star Is Born' at Sun-Ray Cinema @ Sun-Ray Cinema | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

Showtimes: 12:30, 3:15, 6:30 and 9 p.m.

The synopsis from Sun-Ray Cinema: In this new take on the tragic love story, Bradley Cooper plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer … until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.

My take: I admit it’s Bradley Cooper that got me in the door. But it wasn’t his eyes and abs that kept me there (for two hours, I might add … an eternity for someone who isn’t a big fan of sitting in movie theaters). Turns out, Lady Gaga (who I was not a fan of when the film started) is a natural on the big screen. And in another pleasant surprise, my boyfriend can sing, play guitar and write songs (he also directed, produced and co-wrote the movie). I’m no movie reviewer (truth be told, I never saw any of the three previous versions of the movie, not even the Barbra Streisand/Kris Kristofferson one), so I’ll just give it my highest compliment: I didn’t look at my phone once. That and I’ve been listening to the soundtrack, which is one of the best I’ve heard in forever, non-stop. Oh, and I’m now officially a fan of Lady Gaga’s.

NOTE: Obviously, “A Star Is Born” is playing at many theaters in town, but in my opinion, Sun-Ray is the best. And no fancy recliner chair is going to change that.

The Naked Magicians @ Thrasher-Horne Center
Oct 13 @ 8:00 pm
The Naked Magicians @ Thrasher-Horne Center

From event organizers:  Seen on London’s West End, in 200+ cities around the world, and by over 50 million on TV – The Naked Magicians is undoubtedly the world’s funniest and naughtiest magic show!

The show features magic, mirth and more than a touch of mayhem as these two hot and hilarious Aussie magicians say abracadabra and take magic to a whole new level.

This boisterous R-rated magic show strips away the top hats and capes, promising full-frontal illusions. Left without sleeves or pockets, their saucy magic is baffling and entertaining, bringing a new meaning to “now you see it.”

NOTE: The Naked Magicians are for ages 18 and over only.  The show includes coarse language, sexual references and male nudity… get ready to have some fun!

My two cents: I love magic, Australian accents and hot guys.

In other words … see you there.
