The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!
As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.
NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
And by the way, be sure to change the view from “month” to “stream” below. Unless you like being really annoyed.
The Beaches Museum & History Park is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibit “Nature Reconstructed” by artist Lana Shuttleworth. Her highly original art uses common plastic castoff materials, particularly traffic safety cones, to create lavish landscapes and sculptural figures that challenge the viewer’s comprehension. The Los Angeles Times said that in her work “you find yourself looking at these everyday plastic objects in a whole new way.”
Lana has exhibited throughout the West coast and the East coast, with reviews in the Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, ArtScene, Florida Times-Union and nationwide Associated Press articles. Her artwork was also featured on the quiz show, Jeopardy. She was recently the cover artist for the prestigious art and literary journal, Cincinnati Review, which featured an eight-page spread of her work. The Beaches Museum is proud to showcase the thought-provoking work of this astonishing and talented artist.”
The exhibit will be on display February 9 – June 3. For more information please call 904-241-5657 or visit www.beachesmuseum.org.

For 30 years DA’s annual Extravaganza has successfully promoted the best of what Douglas Anderson students have to offer, highlighting a wide range of styles and moods of music, writing, film, dance, and theatre, as well as a stunning display of visual art. Those of you who have attended previous Extravaganzas know how special and professional this evening is, and this year promises to be better than ever! Over 580 students will participate in the production, which will include several collaborative works as well as some surprises. Our Shining Star series will feature a prominent Douglas Anderson alumnus.
What To Expect
The evening will begin at 6:30pm in the main lobby with an Art Exhibition of student work from our Visual Arts department. Original student-produced short films from our Cinematic Arts department will run continuously on large screens. Guests will move into the theatre at 7:20pm for an energetic performance, including collaborations between departments, a musical review, and individual spotlights on student performers.

The Root Ball is a benefit for Greenscape of Jacksonville, produced by The Late Bloomers Garden Club.
Tying the event in with St. Patrick’s Day will add another level of fun, Dooley says. Irish musician/songwriter (and Jacksonville transplant) Brendan Doherty, will perform traditional Irish songs as well as original songs from his last album, “Feels Like Home,” which Irish Music Magazine’s Seán Laffey said, “If you need a label to describe his style, think John Denver at his very best.” Doherty will be accompanied on fiddle by Philip Pan, former concertmaster for the Jacksonville Symphony and member of Canary in a Coalmine. Pan currently performs with folk/rock band Folk is People and Mariachi Primera Costa.
The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails, festive food, music, dancing and a silent auction featuring a variety of original artwork, fine wines, gift baskets, a putter autographed by Arnold Palmer and a catered yacht cruise on Innisfail, an impeccably restored 1930 Mathis-Trumpy motor yacht that hosted several U.S. presidents.
Attire is “green casual.”
