Events

The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!

As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.

NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to whatsup@thespecktator.com.

And by the way, be sure to change the view from “month” to “stream” below. Unless you like being really annoyed.

Nov 16 @ 7:30 pm
"Curtains" @ Douglas Anderson School of the Arts—Debow Theatre | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

From datheatreboosters.org

Curtains, the murder mystery musical comedy, tells the story of a misguided Broadway show in its floundering out-of-town tryout, and the backstage mishaps that occur when its talentless leading lady is murdered during a curtain call, and the show itself is slaughtered by critics. Enter Lt. Frank Coiffi, a dedicated Boston detective, called upon to investigate the crime. But as the bodies begin piling up, Frank must act quick to solve the crime, all the while falling in love with a chorine, as well as with life in the theatre itself. With music and lyrics by the Tony-winning songwriters of Chicago and Cabaret, Curtains is a love letter to the Golden Age of the Broadway musical, and the firm belief that “putting on a musical has got to be one of the greatest things a person can do.”

"Grey Gardens" @ Theatre Jacksonville | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

From Theatre Jacksonville:

The hilarious and heartbreaking story of Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, once bright names on the social register who became East Hampton’s most notorious recluses.

The talented cast includes Amy Farmer, Laura Adkison, Daniel Austin, Kelly Wolfe, Justin Reynolds, Kevin Bodge, Kevin Turner, Tatum Matthews, and Cecilia Adkison under the direction of Michael Lipp. Musical direction by Ben Beck and Choreography by Curtis Williams.

As a side note, this musical was developed in a workshop at White Oak Plantation just north of Jacksonville as part of the Sundance Theatre Institute. Sarah Boone worked with composer Scott Frankel to cast two of our local students to appear in the workshop production. The show went on from workshop phase to Off-Broadway before opening on Broadway and winning multiple Tony Awards.
