Events

The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!

As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.

NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to whatsup@thespecktator.com.

And by the way, be sure to change the view from “month” to “stream” below. Unless you like being really annoyed.

European Street’s annual Oktoberfest party in the parking lot features all your favorite things about Oktoberfest, namely: beer, gigantic pretzels, beer, stein hoisting contests, beer, Monster German Wieners, beer, live oompa music, beer, sauerkraut, beer, German potato salad, beer, Menschen in lederhosen and Alpine Bavarian hats, beer, Frauen in dirndls, beer and, of course, beer.

FUN FACT: E. Street’s International Club sandwich features Polish ham, American roast beef, Boursin spread (that’s French, you know) and Lebanese-sliced lettuce on Jewish rye bread.

Oktoberfest 2015 at Intuition Aleworks
Oct 3 @ 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Oktoberfest 2015 at Intuition Aleworks

Intuition Aleworks turns its brewery into a German beer hall with live oompah (aka oompah-pah) music from the Swinging Bavarians, all you can eat German food, beer games (my personal favorite beer game to play at Intuition is Try Not to Drink So Much King Street Stout That You Don’t Remember How Much Fun You Had and/or Ruin Yet Another Shirt by Spilling That Dark Deliciousness on It) and tapping of Intuition’s Oktoberfest brews.

Be warned: the event usually sells out, so get off your faulen Hintern and get your tickets now! Actually, you don’t even have to get off your fallen Hintern: You can order them online!

FUN FACT: “Intuition” in German is “Intuition.”

Oktoberfest at Art Walk @ Hemming Park
Oct 7 @ 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Oktoberfest at Art Walk @ Hemming Park | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

One of my personal favorite events of the year, Oktoberfest at ArtWalk turns Hemming Park into a giant biergarten. Mayor Lenny Curry performs the tapping of the keg ceremony. Curtis Dvorak serves as emcee. Live music provided by Dan Witucki & The Heimat Musikanten Band. Plus German food, contests, a carnival zone, VIP tent, etc.

FUN FACT: Dan Witucki is considered one of the country’s finest concertina players (look it up; you’ll learn something) and has been inducted into the Concertina Hall of Fame.

Jaxtoberfest @ St. Johns Town Center
Oct 9 @ 4:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Jaxtoberfest @ St. Johns Town Center | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

According to organizers, 50,000 attended Jaxtoberfest in 2014—when it was held at The Shipyards. This year, the two-day event is “moving closer to the center of the city”: St. Johns Town Center. (I’ll be curious to see how that works out.)

Like the other local Oktoberfest celebrations, Jaxtoberfest offers beer, live music, stein holding contests and German food. Unlike the others, this one also features local food trucks, wine and liquor and a brat eating contest.

FUN FACT: First instroduced in 1935, Jägermeister is German digestif made with 56 herbs and spices.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: The first and only time I ever drank of shot of Jäger I wrapped up the night vomiting out my nose. Nie wieder as they say in the motherland.

Beaches Oktoberfest @ Jacksonville Beach Sea Walk Pavilion
Oct 16 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Beaches Oktoberfest @ Jacksonville Beach Sea Walk Pavilion | Jacksonville Beach | Florida | United States

The Beaches Oktoberfest is said to be North Florida’s Oktoberfest, which, I assume, can only mean it’s also the biggest Pukefest. Anyhoo …

The three-day event includes live entertainment, a food truck village, Dogtoberfest, Craft-Toberfest and Kinderzone. It also offers a beach front view, which I’m pretty sure no other Oktoberfest can make that claim in these parts.

(NOT-SO) FUN FACT: Germany has the 11th highest rate of skin cancer in Europe. Switzerland, Norway and Sweden are the top three (in descending order).

Sertoma Club Oktoberfest @ Francis Field
Oct 18 @ 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
Sertoma Club Oktoberfest @ Francis Field | Saint Augustine | Florida | United States

If you can get past the Sertoma Club’s use of the phrase “first annual” (a major pet peeve of mine…), you and the family will probably have an über fun day at the group’s Oktoberfest event.

The day’s activities include arts and crafts, bounce house, face painting, live music and traditional German food such as bratwurst, sauerkraut and pretzels, as well as German—and domestic—beers and desserts.

FUN FACT: Many historians believe that pretzels were “invented” by European monks.
