The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!

As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.

NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to whatsup@thespecktator.com.

We’re excited to bring the Children’s Way 5k & Family Day back to the House & the entire community. The event will be held during the afternoon, and will feature a Christmas Village in our parking lot, as well as an opportunity to tour our House. The funds raised from this fun, family event will help provide temporary lodging for over 1,200 families of critically ill, chronically ill and seriously injured children receiving medical treatment in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Lantern Parade presented by Vystar Credit Union will be a glowing procession of light, color and music that will illuminate the city skyline and the St. Johns River. A combination temporary art installation and family friendly celebration, the parade will shine a light on the creative and kind heart of our beautiful city. A similar event held annually in Atlanta brings together more than 60,000 people each fall.

Help us create a new tradition here in Northeast Florida by launching an awe-inspiring spectacle of art, light, sound and expression.

The parade will feature at least four drum lines and marching bands including the Jaguars D-Line, Still I Stand SIS, the UF Truck Band and Junco Royals. DJs will be playing music at the start and end points. And the iHeartMedia KISS FM remote broadcast tent will be set up at  the mid-point.
The event will also feature a variety of activities for kids and families—including food and drinks  and more. Don’t say goodnight until you visit at least one of the three Lantern Parade photo booths. In addition, our mini-camper photo booth will be parked near the parade starting point and the Jax Mag Selfie Stand will be set up near the midway point. Finally 904 Happy Hour will be shooting photos of parade participants at the ending, at Hogan Street where it meets the river.

​The glowing display of color will literally shine a light on the heart of Jacksonville and everyone is invited! Participation is free to the public. All we ask is that each participant carry something that GLOWS, TWINKLES, or SHINES. Bring either a homemade creation or a store bought item, we don’t mind so long as you participate in the grand illumination.

From event organizers: The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that brings people together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.

From the opening ceremony to the post-walk entertainment, a Making Strides event is a celebration of survivors and opportunity to remember loved-ones lost. It’s a day that shouldn’t be missed and won’t be forgotten.

NOTE: There is no fee to sign up or join. This is a fundraising walk to fund the life saving mission of the American Cancer Society. Please consider making a tax deductible donation.

Registration will be on site, but pre-registration is highly encouraged.

My two cents: My mom died of breast cancer in 1981. She was 41 years old. Considering about 12 percent of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, I don’t want anyone else to have to go through what my mom did. (A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.)
