Events

The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!

As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.

NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to whatsup@thespecktator.com.

And by the way, be sure to change the view from “month” to “stream” below. Unless you like being really annoyed.

Monday Night Trivia With The Specktator @ European Street Cafe—Riverside | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

Lots of restaurants and bars have trivia. But only a chosen few (three to be exact) have The Specktator as host.

In addition to obscure questions, Trivia With The Specktator features musical interludes from local musicians and, if you’re lucky, The 30-Second Dance Party.

Top three teams win gift cards from European Street Cafe. Extended happy hour for players (people playing trivia, that is). And ask your server about late-night happy hour.

Did we mention E. Street won Best Local Trivia in the Folio Weekly Best of Jacksonville Readers Poll in 2017? Because we did.

Aida Musical @ Swisher Theater
Feb 23 @ 7:30 pm

Warring nations come together and forbidden love faces its ultimate challenge in Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida,” the Tony and Grammy award-winning musical that comes to JU’s Swisher Theater Feb. 15-25.

The tale of a bond between an Egyptian prince and a slave transcends borders and has become known since its 2000 Broadway debut for its soaring ballads, rousing rock and choral numbers, and exuberant dancing. True devotion transcends cultural differences in this story of loyalty and betrayal in a love triangle involving Aida, an enslaved Nubian princess stolen from her country; Amneris, an Egyptian princess; and Radames, the soldier they both love.

“Aida is a modern crowd pleaser that embraces multicultural casting and exuberant dancing, staging and singing for a large cast. It even involves some time travel from the present back to 1100 BC,” said Director and acclaimed soprano Kimberly Beasley, Associate Professor of Voice in the College of Fine Arts’ Music Division.

Beasley has double-cast the show, with one cast of mostly seniors and the other made up of “very talented juniors.” All levels of students are cast in secondary roles and in the ensemble. Meanwhile, the orchestra pit features 13 musicians led by Music Director Ben Beck, a staff accompanist at JU, and choreography is by Victoria Miller ‘17.

“This is a dance- and music-heavy show, so it has lots of show-stopping numbers,” Beasley said. “The music is a balance of upbeat rock numbers as well as some beautiful, lyrical pieces. Our singers belt and sing legit in this show.”

The production has been entered for a review by the Kennedy Center American Theatre Festival, a national theater program involving thousands of students from more than 700 colleges and universities whose aim is to boost the quality of college theater in the United States.

Aida has music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. It won four Tony Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Performance by a Leading Actress. The Original Broadway Cast Recording won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. The song “Written in the Stars.” recorded by Elton John and LeAnn Rimes, reached No. 2 on the Billboard U.S. adult contemporary music charts,

“The story is captivating, and we have spent most of January delving into the dramatic elements. The students do extensive dramaturgy to prepare their roles,” Beasley said.

Downtown Community Cleanup @ Lavilla's United Voice | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

From event organizer:

The Downtown Community Cleanup Project will invite every neighborhood organization and cleanup group in the city of Jacksonville to come together for LaVilla. If you’ve been asked to host this event, please accept it and help spread the word. We need as much help as we can get.

The Downtown Community Cleanup Project and the Fight Blight crew will provide enough trash bags, gloves, and tools for everyone, but feel free to bring your own.

Downtown Vision, Inc.’s amazing staff has Volunteered to help out on their day off! (((ROUND OF APPLA– USE))) I* will post photos of problem areas leading up to the event with a location so feel free to prepare for those specific areas (some need shovels and rakes) or just bring yourself, and we’ll tell you where to go.

From 9 AM – 4 PM every group in the DIA will meet at Lavilla’s United Voice at 311 W. Ashley St. From there we will focus on rehabilitating State and Union St and moving to adjacent designated neighborhoods. There are thousands of pounds of trash that needs to be removed. Together, it’s nothing.

In fact, I* bet we can move at least 2,500 pounds of trash in one Saturday.

Return of Thursday Night Trivia With The Specktator @ European Street Cafe—San Marco

Return of Thursday Night Trivia With The Specktator @ European Street Cafe—San Marco | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

It’s been almost six months since European Street Cafe—San Marco drowned as a result of Hurricane Irma. Fortunately, insurance covered the $650,000 in property damage, but I think we can all agree, NO amount of money can replace the hours of fellowship and knowledge we lost through the absence of Thursday Trivia With The Specktator.

But we are back now, baby—and with the title of Best Local Trivia Night in Folio Weekly’s Best of Jax Readers Polls 2017 to boot!

Beginning Thursday, March 1, Thursday Trivia With The Specktator returns … but at a new time: 7 p.m.! (In a related story, all E. Street locations now close at 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.)

To show I have no hard feelings, I will buy dinner for anyone named “Irma” who plays trivia on March 1. (Government-issued ID required for proof of name. Sorry. I have trust issues.)

Until then, my friends, brush up on your Guinness World Records (did you REALLY think I’d forget?) and work on your moves for the return of the 30-Second Dance Party!

And don’t forget to check The Specktator page the day of for a free answer.

Jacksonville, FL – Catholic Charities’ Annual Black & White Ball will be held March 3rd at US Assure Club in EverBank Field.
