Events

The Specktator is thrilled to have European Street Cafe as title sponsor of the online calendar!

As one of my favorite places to eat, drink and socialize in the the city, “E. Street” (as the cool kids call it) makes the perfect partner to help promote the best events happening in the city.

NOTE: This is a “curated calendar,” meaning I have personally reviewed each event and consider it to be of interest to the general public and/or something particularly compelling. It is important to know that businesses cannot buy a calendar entry. That said, if you have an event you would like considered for the calendar, send the pertinent information to whatsup@thespecktator.com.

And by the way, be sure to change the view from “month” to “stream” below. Unless you like being really annoyed.

“The Last Night of Ballyhoo” @ Theatre Jacksonville
Jan 28 @ 8:00 pm
"The Last Night of Ballyhoo" @ Theatre Jacksonville | Jacksonville | Florida | United States

From Theatre Jacksonville:

THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. Especially concerned is the Freitag family: bachelor Adolph, his widowed sister, Beulah (Boo) Levy, and their also widowed sister-in-law, Reba. Boo is determined to have her dreamy, unpopular daughter, Lala, attend Ballyhoo, believing it will be Lala’s last chance to find a socially acceptable husband. Adolph brings his new assistant, Joe Farkas, home for dinner. Joe is Brooklyn born and bred, and furthermore is of Eastern European heritage—several social rungs below the Freitags, in Beulah’s opinion. Lala, however, is charmed by Joe and she hints broadly about being taken to Ballyhoo, but he turns her down. This enrages Boo, and matters get worse when Joe falls for Lala’s cousin, Reba’s daughter, Sunny, home from Wellesley for Christmas vacation. Will Boo succeed in snaring Peachy Weil, a member of one of the finest Jewish families in the South? Will Sunny and Joe avoid the land mines of prejudice that stand in their way? Will Lala ever get to Ballyhoo? The family gets pulled apart and then mended together with plenty of comedy, romance and revelations along the way. Events take several unexpected turns as the characters face where they come from and are forced to deal with who they really are.

Requiem for an Angel @ Jacksonville Symphony
Feb 2 @ 8:00 pm

The dramatic and moving Sinfonia da Requiem is an amazing masterpiece from Britten’s early years.  Shortly before, he had hoped to study with Alban Berg, whose beloved Violin Concerto is played by the masterful British violinist Anthony Marwood.  And Elgar’s opulent, deeply moving First Symphony is possibly the greatest symphony ever written by an Englishman.

Downtown Vision, Inc.’s amazing staff has Volunteered to help out on their day off! (((ROUND OF APPLA– USE))) I* will post photos of problem areas leading up to the event with a location so feel free to prepare for those specific areas (some need shovels and rakes) or just bring yourself, and we’ll tell you where to go.

From 9 AM – 4 PM every group in the DIA will meet at Lavilla’s United Voice at 311 W. Ashley St. From there we will focus on rehabilitating State and Union St and moving to adjacent designated neighborhoods. There are thousands of pounds of trash that needs to be removed. Together, it’s nothing.

Nature Reconstructed – Art Opening for Lana Shuttleworth @ The Beaches History Museum and Park
Feb 9 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Please join me for the opening reception for my new show!

The Beaches Museum & History Park is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibit “Nature Reconstructed” by artist Lana Shuttleworth. Her highly original art uses common plastic castoff materials, particularly traffic safety cones, to create lavish landscapes and sculptural figures that challenge the viewer’s comprehension. The Los Angeles Times said that in her work “you find yourself looking at these everyday plastic objects in a whole new way.”

Lana has exhibited throughout the West coast and the East coast, with reviews in the Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, ArtScene, Florida Times-Union and nationwide Associated Press articles. Her artwork was also featured on the quiz show, Jeopardy. She was recently the cover artist for the prestigious art and literary journal, Cincinnati Review, which featured an eight-page spread of her work. The Beaches Museum is proud to showcase the thought-provoking work of this astonishing and talented artist.”

The exhibit will be on display February 9 – June 3. For more information please call 904-241-5657 or visit www.beachesmuseum.org.
